The foundation of Saurashtra University was not accidental. It emerged from a sustained and passionate demand for a separate university distinct from Gujarat University in Ahmedabad. Eminent educationists and freedom fighters from the Saurashtra region played a pivotal role in articulating this vision, arguing that the cultural, linguistic, and educational needs of the region required a dedicated institution.
This demand gained significant momentum following the formation of the state of Gujarat on May 1, 1961. With the reorganization of states, regional identity and administrative efficiency became central themes, and the call for a separate university for Saurashtra became increasingly prominent. Responding to these aspirations, the Gujarat Legislative Assembly passed the Saurashtra University Act in 1965, formally known as Gujarat Act No. 39 of 1965.

Saurashtra University was officially established on May 23, 1967. In its initial phase, the university operated with two headquarters located in Rajkot and Bhavnagar. This dual arrangement reflected the transitional phase of higher education administration in the region. However, the academic landscape changed with the incorporation of Bhavnagar University, after which Rajkot became the sole headquarters of Saurashtra University.
The university campus in Rajkot has since grown into a vast academic space, spread across 363 acres of land. Currently, Saurashtra University houses 29 postgraduate departments on its campus, covering disciplines across science, arts, commerce, law, education, and social sciences. In addition, it oversees 285 affiliated colleges and one autonomous college, making it a major hub of higher education in western Gujarat.

The NFDD was designed as a state-of-the-art research and innovation centre, focusing on drug discovery and related scientific fields. Recognizing its growing impact and potential, the facility was later transformed into a Centre of Excellence (COE) in 2014.

The university maintains active Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with 64 national and international institutions, facilitating academic exchange, collaborative research, and joint programs. Such partnerships enhance global exposure and strengthen the university’s research ecosystem.
In terms of academic impact, the cumulative h-index of Saurashtra University stands at 487 at the country level. The university’s performance in success percentile rankings further reflects its research strength, with multiple scientists ranked within the top 10, top 30, and top 50 percentiles nationally.
Faculty members at Saurashtra University have produced 292 research publications over the past five years, demonstrating sustained scholarly engagement across disciplines.
Student Life, Sports, and Cultural Activities
Beyond academics, Saurashtra University maintains a vibrant campus life enriched by cultural, athletic, and professional events. The university regularly organizes youth festivals, cultural programs, job fairs, and e-tablet distribution drives, contributing to student development beyond the classroom.
Sports play a major role in campus life, with the university hosting and participating in events such as Ranji Trophy matches, the Pro Kabaddi League, the Saurashtra Premier League (SPL), and various inter-university championships. Students of Saurashtra University have consistently performed well in state and national competitions. Over the last two years alone, university athletes have secured two gold medals in woodball (men’s and women’s categories) and a silver medal in women’s judo at the national level.
NAAC Accreditation and Quality Assurance
Quality assurance has been a defining feature of Saurashtra University’s institutional journey. The university holds the distinction of being the first conventional state university in Gujarat to receive an ‘A’ Grade accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2014.
Notably, Saurashtra University was among the earliest universities in Gujarat to voluntarily seek NAAC accreditation, doing so as early as 2001 during the initial phase of the NAAC framework. Its first accreditation cycle resulted in a four-star rating in February 2002.
In subsequent assessments, the university was re-accredited with a ‘B’ Grade and a CGPA of 2.97 in March 2009. Currently, it continues to hold a ‘B’ Grade accreditation.
The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), established in 2004 in accordance with NAAC recommendations, remains an active body within the university. According to the NAAC Peer Team Report of 2009, Saurashtra University was the first university in India to appoint a full-time IQAC Coordinator, setting a benchmark for institutional quality management.
